Fall 2007 Schedule
MONDAYS
Respect Club
The Respect Club is a group of students concerned with social issues
that partners with Missoula agencies such as the National Coalition
Building Institute and the YWCA, as well as organizing Big Sky’s
Diversity Week. This year Diversity Week will be held on from
February 19-22.
The Respect Club meets during lunch in Room 28 starting October 8th.
Film Class
The Roxy Theatre and International Wildlife Film Festival are
offering a ten-week documentary film class that starts on October 22nd.
Every student will be taught the skills to produce an original 3 to
5 minute documentary. At the end of the semester,
students will present their films to their peers and families at an
exciting FREE Awards & Premier night.
This class will meet on Mondays and Thursdays after school until 6
PM.
Space
in this free class is limited to four students.
Gladiators
Hellgate High School has a Gladiators Club, a
battlefield role-playing game. They have invited a few students from Big
Sky to learn how they run the club so that Big Sky can offer it next
spring.
This club starts October 1st and meets at Hellgate.
TUESDAYS
Sacks Appeal Art Project
The Sacks Appeal Art Project is in a
partnership with the University of Montana and will be taught by UM
art students. Students will be given blank shopping bags to create
original artwork on. From 1961-1999, some of the world’s most famous
artists have participated in this project, including Andy Warhol, Keith
Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Annie Liebowitz. Big
Sky students who are participating in this project will have their work
displayed in downtown Missoula at Miss Zula’s beginning on November
2nd as a part of the First Friday Art Walk. This exhibit
will be a satellite exhibit to the one at the Paxson Gallery at UM,
which will run from October 30 to December 22nd featuring
bag designs by Haring, Hockney, and Lichtenstein, among others.
Following the work on Sacks Appeal, this class will work on
designing original t-shirts by using block printing and batik
methods.
This group will meet from 3:30 to 5:00 on
Tuesdays starting October 16th.
WEDNESDAYS
Martial Arts
Bruce Lee wanted to free
people from the bondage to styles and patterns in the martial arts,
therefore, tradition is stripped away. We concentrate on using flexible responses rather than preconceived movements in applying our
martial method. JKD training emphasizes economy of motion, such as
“Stop Hits” and “Stop Kicks”, simultaneous parrying and hitting, and
no high kicks. The techniques are simple, direct, and efficient.
Most martial art systems focus on only a few ranges of
confrontation, such as kicking, punching or grappling. In our JKD,
Filipino Martial Arts and Mixed Martial Arts classes, we cover these
as well as the range of trapping and the outside range of weapon
handling and disarms. Our school’s philosophy is to embrace
moralities such as endurance, tolerance, humility, forgiveness, and
peace. We promote physical force as a last resort. Conditioning is
emphasized to develop the student into a higher level of fitness in
conjunction with attribute training to raise their individual
athletic ability which can be applied to any sport.
This group meets at Mountain Martial Arts, from 4
to 5:30, starting October 10th.
Bluegrass Jam
This jam session will be taking place
in Mr. Cummins' room during lunch. This gathering is open to
beginning musicians (most of the songs played only have three
chords, ‘G’, ‘C’ and ‘D’), experienced musicians and non-musicians
(we will have some percussion instruments for you to bang on).
This group meets at lunch in Room 64 starting October
10th.
School of Rock
Rock musicians from Big Sky will team
with students from Franklin Elementary to write original rock
songs. The students will form a rock group, name it, produce a logo
to be placed on t-shirts, and record their songs on a CD. At the
conclusion of the class, the group will schedule a live
performance.
This
group meets at Franklin starting October 3rd.
THURSDAYS
Trading Cards
Trading Cards is a mentoring program
that matches students from Big Sky with partners from Franklin
Elementary to participate in activities on early out Thursdays once
a month. If you are a good role model and enjoy spending time with
elementary age students, Trading Cards might be your club. The
Franklin students will visit Big Sky to hang out with the Big Sky
students and we will also take ‘field trips’ around Missoula to
places like The Carousel and Big Dipper.
This group meets at Big Sky starting October 25th.
Film

FRIDAYS
Ultimate Frisbee
This group will meet as long as
weather permits and is open to beginners and skilled players. In
the Fall, we will work on our game and recruit players for the
spring, when we form a team that participates in the Missoula Youth
Ultimate League. This league features competitive games against
players from Hellgate and Sentinel and is coached by competitive
adult ultimate players from the city leagues.
This group meets at Big Sky during lunch on Fridays.
