Fall 2008 Programs

Documentary Film Class: Work with the Montana Film Academy to produce a professional quality documentary.  This group meets Mondays and Wednesdays after school at the Roxy Theatre starting November 3rd.   Another filmmaking option for students is to become certified to use the equipment at Missoula Community Access Television.  Students who have pursued this option in the past now have shows airing on MCAT (Bresnan Cable Channel 7).

Trading Cards:  This group acts as mentors to students from Franklin Elementary.  They meet once a month to participate in fun activities both at Big Sky and off campus.  The first meeting with Franklin will be October 30th.

Music Club:  If you want to talk about music or trade music with other fans of rock, show up at this club on Wednesdays during lunch in Room 32.  This group will also record a monthly podcast giving their music recommendations to Big Sky and the rest of the world.

Respect Club:  This group organizes Big Sky’s Diversity Week and also volunteers their time with local agencies and organizations.  Meets Mondays during lunch in Room 45.

Hip Hop Dance:  This group will learn the basics of hip hop dance and depending on the motivation of the group, stage a public performance.  Taught by Chris Coburn of On Center Dance Studio.  Tuesdays after school starting November 4th.

National Coalition Building Institute Leadership Group:  This group is currently conducting prejudice and violence prevention workshops with the freshman class at Big Sky.  They have completed a three day training course and will work with all the freshmen at Big Sky to promote tolerance in our school.

Connections Crew:  This group of student leaders plans and executes Big Sky’s 8th grade visitation in the spring as well as the Freshman Orientation.  If interested in helping out, please contact the Flagship Office.

Music Recording:  Last year was the first year of music recording at Big Sky and it produced a full length album by Big Sky’s masters of metal, Helliana.  This year we will attempt to record another album but the focus will be on collaboration between a variety of musicians.   This group will meet for the first time on Thursday, October 9th during lunch in the Flagship Office.  After school recording will take place on Wednesdays.

Rock Guitar:  This class is for intermediate level guitar players and is taught by Rick “Shredder” Robbins, a Big Sky alum and one of the best metal guitarists in Missoula.  Meets in Room 92 after school on Thursdays.

Community Volunteering:  Flagship will present numerous opportunities for students to volunteer their time during the school year.  We have already volunteered for the Missoula AIDS Council as ushers at the opening of the AIDS Quilt Project at the University of Montana.  The next opportunity to volunteer will be on October 14th with Forward Montana, a group that will canvas Missoula to offer non-partisan information to voters prior to the national election.  We are also scheduled to volunteer at the Missoula Food Bank on the day before Thanksgiving, one of the Food Bank’s busiest days of the year.

First Night Idol:  If you are a singer/rapper/performer and would like a shot at displaying your talent at the Wilma Theatre, please sign up to compete in Big Sky’s preliminary competition which will be held after school on December 9th at Big Sky.  You can sing any song, original or cover and vie to represent Big Sky o n New Years Eve in front of a thousand people during the First Night celebration.

Silvah Chalice:  This game was invented by students at Big Sky and continues to entertain the masses.  Many people are asking, when is the next Silvah Chalice tournament?  Flagship will be sponsoring a Christmas tournament December 15-19th.   Win a Silvah Chalice t-shirt if you ‘chalice’ in tournament competition.
