Fall 2008 Descriptions for
Hellgate High School
*Most activities start in October.
Stop by the Flagship office (226) for more information. All Flagship
participants must complete an enrollment form.
Respect Club
Members
of the club are joined by their common interest to reduce prejudice
and raise tolerance levels in their community. Every fall this group
produces Diversity Week at Hellgate. Students will help organize and
introduce speakers from the community as well as run workshops for
their peers. This is one of the most progressive and fun weeks of
the year! Respect Club meets Mondays at lunch in The Flagship
office.
Gladiator School
Gladiator School began as a senior project in 2006. Since that time
it has become one of Hellgate’s most popular and unusual activities.
Students practice the art of medieval style combat. Dates TBA.
Ladies Kickboxing
For
girls only! Have fun and get exercise at the same time. This group
of ladies meets once a week for cardio kickboxing. Kickboxing meets
Mondays after school until 4:00pm.
High
School Canvas and Party
On
October 14th students from all three high schools
will get together for a huge NON PARTISAN canvas. Students will be
trained on safety and the importance of being non-partisan. Then
they will canvas their own neighborhood to remind people to vote.
After the canvas, there will a party. Many Social Studies teachers
are offering extra credit for this event!
Ultimate Frisbee
Flagship started the first youth Ultimate Frisbee league in Missoula
last spring and it was wildly successful. Students from all three
high schools played games and competed for the city championship (go
Knights!). This fall an All Star team has been put together
including members from each school. Practice is Tuesdays at 5:30
at Sentinel.
Printing
Art
students from the U will be coming to Hellgate to help the Respect
Club or students just interested in art, print HUGE murals (using a
steam roller) and T-Shirts to wear during Diversity Week. Printing
meets Wednesdays after school until 4:30.
Documentary Film Making
Flagship partners with the International Wildlife Film Festival to
provide an in-depth documentary film making class. Students use the
latest technology and learn from some of the best film makers in the
community. Dates TBA.
Footbag
Otherwise known as hacky sac, students meet once a week to practice
their favorite alternative sport. They are taught by two volunteers
who competed in the World Championship. Footbag meets Tuesdays
after school in the cafeteria until 4:00pm.
Anime Club
Students meet twice a week during lunch to watch and discuss their
favorite Japanese Animation films. They are encouraged to dress up
as their favorite anime character! Anime meets Tuesdays and
Thursdays in room 229.
Hip
Hop Dance Team
Students will be coached by Tarah, from the University Dance Team.
They will perform at several school functions and around the
community. Students who get involved should be prepared to work hard
and commit to practice at least twice a week. Hip Hop dance meets
Wednesdays and Fridays after school in the fitness room until
4:30pm.
Elementary School Buddies
Lowell
elementary school students come to Hellgate once a month.
Together we do fun activities, like making ginger bread houses,
carving pumpkins and going to the carousel. Give Back! The first
buddy event will be on October 29th after school in
the cafeteria until 5:00pm.
Poetry Slam
Flagship newest club will meet Wednesdays after school in room
330. Taught by an old school Slammer, this alternative art is
sort of like poetry and sort of like hip hop. Since it is
performance based we will be holding several “coffee house”
performances in the community this spring.
Photography
One of
the best photographers in the country, Hellgate parent and Rocky
Mountain School of Photography owner Neil Chaput returns again. This
digital photography class will start after Thanksgiving. The class
will meet Tuesdays at 3:10 at The Rocky Mountain School of
Photography until 5:00pm. To get an application, stop by the
Flagship office.
Ski
and Snowboard Club
Leave
at 4am and return at midnight…this year we will be hitting up Big
Sky, Big Mountain, Schweitzer, and Bridger Bowl. Lunch meetings
with more information will begin on November 19th in
room 320. This is one of the very few Flagship activities that
cost $. Students must commit to two trips; each trip is $60.00.
Homework Zone
Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesdays starting in October, get free
homework help after school. Tutors from multiple disciplines are
available on a first come, first serve basis.
Trick or Eat
For
students who miss knocking on doors! Instead of collecting candy,
collect food for the Missoula Food Bank. We will meet at 5:00pm
on Oct 31st (big surprise). In the spirit of eating,
we will have pizza for students who participate. Don’t worry, since
it is a Friday, we will be done by 8:00.
First Night Idol
If
you’re feeling patriotic, take part in the activity that grabbed
America by storm. Students from Hellgate will perform in a
preliminary round on November 25th after
school in the auditorium. The top 3 will perform at The Wilma on New
Years Eve! Get an application in The Flagship Office.
Thank you for supporting Hellgate Flagship!!
