Spring 2008 Activity Descriptions
Respect Club
The
Flagship Program at Big Sky and Hellgate High Schools, as well as
all three middle schools in Missoula, partner with The National
Coalition Building Institute to form Respect Club. Members of the
club are joined by their common interest to reduce prejudice and
raise tolerance levels in their community.
Peer Action
A Peer
Action team has been established in Missoula through the Flagship
Program. It includes members from all three high schools. Students
use media literacy skills they have learned to reduce drug and
alcohol use among their peers through a counter advertising
campaign.
Gladiator School
Gladiator School began as a senior project in 2006. Since that time
it has become one of Hellgate’s most popular and unusual activities.
Students practice the art of combat, medieval style.
Ladies Kickboxing
For
girls only! Have fun and get exercise at the same time. This group
of ladies meets once a week for cardio kickboxing.
Building Futures
Students not only learn the basic principles involved in
constructing a back-yard playhouse, but will receive first-hand
information and exposure to potential future careers in the building
industry. Students who participate in this program are also eligible
for a scholarship from the Missoula Building Industry Association.
Lacrosse
As well
as practicing twice a week, lacrosse participants will be coaching
the sport at Meadow Hill Middle School. This is the second year for
the men’s team, who will play their first game against Sandpoint ID
and the first year for the women’s to practice.
Volunteers in Action
Eager
students get involved in their community by giving back twice a
month. Their focus this year has been helping the Poverello Center
meet its needs.
Ultimate Frisbee
Flagship started the first youth Ultimate Frisbee league in Missoula
last spring and it was wildly successful. Students from all three
high schools played games and compete for the city championship (go
Knights!).
FOLF
A
Missoula favorite! Frisbee Golf attracts a wide range of
participants, who are all eager to improve their game. Hellgate has
long been known for producing some of the best folf players in the
state.

This
class will be held at Missoula Automotive Technology. Once a week
students will have the opportunity to tear apart and restore vintage
cars and learn from a dedicated group of specialists.
Table Tennis
Hellgate’s first annual Table Tennis Tournament began as a senior
project and will be held this winter. Students play against their
peers for the school title in a double elimination tournament.

provide an in depth documentary film making class. Students use the
latest technology and learn from some of the best film makers in the
community.

their favorite alternative sport. They are taught by two volunteers
who competed in the World Championship.
Anime Club
Students meet twice a week during lunch to watch and discuss their
favorite Japanese Animation films.
Geocaching
Geocaching is as close as it gets to actual treasure hunting. This
activity uses GPS technology to find hidden treasures all over
downtown Missoula. A great excuse to hit the town!
Swing Dance and Hip Hop Dance
As
requested, Swing Dance will be taught this spring. Students may come
with or without a partner. Hip Hop Dance will be taught by the same
fabulous instructor and students will have a chance to perform this
spring in front of their peers.
