Winter/Spring Flagship Programs
GLADIATORS A full contact study in the art of medieval style combat. This program started as a senior project in 2006 and has grown to become one of Hellgate’s most popular clubs! Meet in the Flagship office on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3-5 p.m., then move to the Cafeteria or outside on nice days.
RESPECT CLUB Members are joined by their common interest to reduce prejudice and promote acceptance in their community. This group produces Diversity Week, February 20-24th, 2012, at Hellgate. Students will help organize and introduce speakers from the community as well as run workshops for their peers. Tuesdays @ lunch in the Auditorium with Curriculum & Instruction Graduate student Carole Meyers.
PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB This club will learn the essentials of photography and work to create a photography exhibit celebrating the rich diversity within Hellgate, Missoula and Montana. Tuesdays from 3-5 in Mr. Shepherd’s room, 332, with local professional photographer, Ashley McKee. Winter start up date TBA.
WRITERS’ CIRCLE Write, listen, and share—poetry, short stories, screenplays, novels, or whatever other form of writing you want to explore! A collection of original work will be created, a public reading may be achieved. In Ms. Gant’s room, 330. Wednesdays from 3-5, starts up again January 11th.
HATHA YOGA Learn physical postures that build strength, flexibility, and overall health as well as basic philosophy of yoga. We will provide yoga mats, just bring comfortable clothing that will allow you to move freely. Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00 in the fitness room with local yoga instructor Ashley Sherburne (the Flagship Coordinator). Start date TBA.
TUTORING Students interested in getting help from a tutor in any and all academic areas, or just to get your homework done after school, should contact Flagship, room 338. Monday and Thursday every week, with a focus on math on Thursdays. In the library. Start up date for winter TBA.
ROOTS & SHOOTS “The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen—for our people, for animals and for the environment.” Join the amazing international organization created by Jane Goodall in 1991 by participating in outings, events, and volunteerism. Days, times, and places will vary. See Ashley in the Flagship Office for more information.
SKI & SNOBOARD CLUB (Yeti Patrol!) Leave at 4am and return at midnight… Lunch meetings every other Wednesday in the Flagship Office. Starts up again on January 4th. This is one of the very few Flagship activities that costs money to take part in, but fundraising opportunities are available!
GRAPHIC NOVEL BOOK Read and discuss new and interesting graphic novels. Also: Workshop your own ideas, put pen to paper and create YOUR new and interesting comic. In Mr. Quinlan’s room, 108. Winter/spring day and time TBA.
FILM MAKING CLUB Take part in this awesome club and you will have the chance to be a part of a film that will be viewed during Diversity Week. Write a screenplay, film, act, produce, and promote your film throughout this fall and into the winter. More projects to come after Diversity Week. With junior Dylan Albans, 3-5 on Fridays in Mr. Christopher’s room, 229. Starts up again on January 6th.
OULA “is an inspiring and super fun dance workout! Oula offers the perfect balance between the ‘hip’ and the ‘hippy’ with its structured, easy to follow, fun choreography while at the same time encouraging self-expression and freedom of movement.” Taught by junior Mckinley Williams. Mondays in the Fitness room from 3:30-5:00. Starts January 9th.
ROLE PLAYING CLUB “A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting, or through a process of structured decision-making or character development.” Day/time TBA. With Brandon Waldenberg in Ms. Hendrick’s room, 310.

ANIME Do you have a passion for Japanese Culture, especially Japanese animation including video and drawing? ANIME meets Monday & Thursday at Lunch. In Mr. Dohn’s room, 114.
*RAP CREW Learn to rap, show off your skills, and do mixing and recording with local musician and recorder Christopher Baumann. Days and times TBA. See Ashley in the Flagship office for more information.
ELEMENTARY BUDDIES Go on adventures and do fun activities with a buddy from Lowell Elementary! Meets Thursdays from 2-5. Starts up again March 22nd. See Ashley in the Flagship office for more information.
INTERNATIONAL CLUB Learn about cultures from every corner of the world and mingle with your wonderfully diverse fellow students. Led by senior Carolina Osorio and with visitors from the international community at the University of Montana. Tuesdays from 3-4 in room 128. Starts up again January 17th.
CULTURAL COOKING Join this awesomely popular group where you will learn to create (and sample!) delicious meals from around the world while learning about different cultures. Thursdays from 2-5 with senior Zach Baker and UM student Cassandra Jochim in room 122/126. Starts up again on January 19th.
BUILDING FUTURES Students will be instructed by professional volunteers from various aspects of the building industry, learning basic principles involved with construction. Participants will also receive first-hand info and exposure to potential future careers in building industry. Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3-5:30. DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION “DanceDanceRevolution is the definitive Music & Motion game that combines fun, fitness, competition, dance and music for everyone!” Tuesdays from 3-5 in room 130 with senior Alyssa Rawson. See Ashley in the Flagship office for more information.
FLASH MOB Join students from other Flagship programs throughout Missoula to learn a dance and participate in a flash mob at the mall to the Glee version of “We Got the Beat”! Mondays from 3-5 with UM Dance Department student Emily Vascimini. Will start February 13th and the dance will take place on March 12th at the Southgate Mall. JAPANESE LANGUAGE CLUB Learn Japanese with UM Japanese Student Association volunteers! Thursdays in Ms. Hanford’s room, 318, from 2-4. Starts up again on February 2nd.
COMPUTER PROGRAMMING Interested in programming? Join the Hellgate Programming Club and learn how! Whether you're a code newbie or a seasoned programming veteran, there's always more to learn. The first 5+ meetings will include instruction in the basics of programming for those interested, and will be taught in Processing, which is an extension of Java.. Led by senior Amzi Jeffs. Wednesdays after school from 3-4 in Ms. Cole’s room, 326. Starts January 25th.
FOOTBAG/HACKY SACK Hone your skills and hang out with friends in this casual club. Bring music to listen to while you play! Room and day TBA. See Ashley in the Flagship office for more information.
*OUTDOOR ADVENTURERS Go on epic outdoor adventures and expand your knowledge of the Great Outdoors—hike, explore, and learn! Winter/spring day TBA. See Ashley in the Flagship office for more information.
ULTIMATE FRISBEE “Ultimate is a sport played with a 175 gram flying disc. The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc to a player in the opposing end zone, similar to an end zone in American football or rugby. Players may not run with the disc, and may only move one foot (pivot) while holding the disc.” Days and times TBA. See Ashley in the Flagship office for more information.
AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE Learn the basics of sign language in this six week session taught by Brandy Reinhardt. Room and time TBA. Starts in May.
