How do I sign my child(ren) up?
Hi! My name is Katy Branston and I am thrilled to be starting the 2011-2012 schoolyear at Hawthorne Elementary as the Flagship Coordinator. Over the last year I have volunteered with the Flagship Program and served in various ways at Hawthorne, and now I look forward to working full-time with these two wonderful communities of students, parents, and professionals. I am especially proud to be a Hawthorne Hawk!
A Southern girl at heart, I was born and raised in Memphis, TN, home of the blues, Elvis, and the world's best barbeque. I attended college at Elon University, a mid-sized liberal arts school in central North Carolina. During my time there, I got my degree in corporate communications and spent a semester studying abroad in Perugia, Italy soaking up the Italian culture. In the summertime, I served as a counselor and activity leader at two summer camps, which is where I developed my passion for working with kids of all ages. Camp songs and games are some of my favorite ways to connect with kids!
After graduation, I visited Montana in the fall of 2009 and instantly fell in love with its mountainous landscape and wide open spaces. The day I stepped foot in Missoula I knew I had found my new home, and two months later I was on a train from Memphis to Montana with all of my belongings. Every day I have grown to love this community more and more, and I am thrilled to be an even bigger part of it through the Flagship Program at Hawthorne.
When I'm not working I can be found doing something outdoors, most likely with a Frisbee in hand. I am a member of the Mental Toss Flycoons, Missoula's elite co-ed ultimate Frisbee team. I also enjoy disc golfing, backpacking, biking, skiing, playing tennis, soccer, kickball, inner tube water polo, and any other obscure sport you can think of. My newest hobby is juggling!
I can't wait to share my skills and passions with the students at Hawthorne while helping them explore their own through a diverse range of programs. There is so much talent within these school walls, and I hope to help bring it up to the surface.
